Istanbul Masterplan

The masterplan is defined on a grid system running directly north to south which is only intersected by a diagional access across the site from the university to the current position of Istanbul modern. The rules for the grid are as follows:
1. All the buildings along the bosphourous to be removed allowing access to the river.
2. Add buildings along the Rd side to remove the road noise and traffic connection while creating a large public space.
The buildings are then defined by using the grid and the idea of two principles above.

5in1 hotel stack: TEAM E

We started by experimenting with our models in creating spaces. In our initial ideas we played with creating an inside and outside interaction between the public and guests and by having a "public access route" through our building. These initial experiments lead us to start to explore the idea of planes, which were pierced by walls. These spaces then created programmatic areas. However we then took this language one step further and started cutting strips from our planes and these strips in turn would then create the programmatic areas i.e. furniture or structural elements. These ideas can be seen in the pictures below.

5in1 hotel stack: TEAM E

We were asked to design and program a Hotel lobby.
We set about by deciding on our program for our Lobby, which consisted of a Bar, Restaurant, Exhibition space, Performance space and public space. With these areas in mind we started to develop our design through Rhino 3D and mainly model making of different scales.

Hotel Diagional Barcelona

Site Plan and axo.

Hotel services and exploded axo structure.

Hotel diagonal is designed by Architect Juli Capella.
The Hotel is located on the same block as Jean Nouvels Tore Agbar along the Diagonal Avenue in Barcelona, which is where it takes its name.
The hotels rectingular shape is derived from the most economic use of space and structure as it double loads the corridors with rooms stacked vertically either side. This rectangular shape is clad in tinted glass. To break the monotony of a single rectangular shape, the architect played with the facade by extracting and cantilevering rooms over the square below. This play on shape gave an extra function to the rooms. The extruded forms are finished externally in white. This led to the facade taking on a piano like form as the extruded white rooms played against the dark tinted glass.
The external piano like resemblance, has had a further impact on the programatic side of the hotel, as there is a piano bar and a grand piano shape swimming pool on the roof terrace.
The roof terrace comprises of a cocktai bar, solarium and swimming pool but also a transparent mesh like structure resembling a pergola. This structure comprises of 90 integrated solar panels.
