The exploration of innovative techniques using a traditional construction method. In the pursuit of minimal formwork the week’s task was to explore the use of fabric, replacing the traditional method of timber formwork. A series of concept prototypes where made, investigating various methods of fixing seems, creating stability, and controlling form.
A process of trial and error led to the forming of a free standing wall 2m in height, 1.5m in length and a width that bulges from 200mm in excess of 500mm. A wall nearing the structural integrity of concrete expressing the aesthetic of a waterbed.
The Marriott marquis is located in Atlanta, Georgia in USA. It is the third hotel forming the Peachtree Centre, all of which were design by John Portman over a period of nearly twenty years and each of distinguishing features.
